200th Anniversary Read-Along
To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Stoddart's Trip to Scotland, The SSH Project sent out a newsletter where subscribers could read the entries of Stoddart's journal exactly 200 years after they were recorded.
The newsletter can now be found on Substack.
About the newsletter
Between April 14th and July 18th, 2022, subscribers to the newsletter received daily emails that corresponded with the journal entries Stoddart wrote between April 14th and July 18th, 1822 along with a link to the Google Earth map that shows exactly where Stoddart walked that day. The goal of this read-along newsletter is to bring the Journal into a modern context while offering a novel reading experience that is accessible for all. Anyone can subscribe to the newsletter for free at any time before July 18th, 2022, and an archive of all past posts is available here.
A note on the text
The text of the newsletter has been transcribed from the 1959 Bonner edition of the text (the most recent edition) and cross-referenced with the Le Gallienne edition when needed. To preserve Stoddart's unique style and her historical/cultural perspective, errors and inconsistencies in spelling, grammar, and syntax--which are most frequently related to capitalization and the anglicization of Scottish and Irish names--have been retained unless necessary for comprehension; the few changes made have been bracketed. Footnotes have also been limited to keep focus on Stoddart's experience and allow for an accessible reading experience, but additional notes on the journal entries can be found in the annotated map linked to each post.
